Rethinking the Three Strikes Law

In a time when California is facing it’s biggest deficit in years is it time to rethink what I would submit are the unintended consequences of the enactment of the three strikes law?

Currently California incarcerates a prison population that continues to rise for longer periods of time than just about any state in our union. Since Three Strikes was passed the numbers of inmates at California prison institutions has quadrupled leading to overcrowding, higher rates of violence and more inmates serving life sentences than at any other time in our State’s history. Concurrent with this explosion has been the need to hire more prison guards, build more institutions, overtime allotments, pay for rising food, clothing, beds, cells and legal materials.
